Every marriage will have ups and downs. Part of what keeps couples together is how they handle those times. Some people may try to hold on to the marriage as long as they can. While that’s noble, there are a few things that may signal that it’s time to call it quits.
If you realize that any of these are present in your marriage, it’s time to look at the entire situation to determine your next steps.
1. Abuse of any sort
Any type of abuse, including emotional, financial, or physical shouldn’t ever be present in a marriage. These are signs that you urgently need to leave the relationship. The same is true if your spouse is abusing any substance. It’s sometimes possible to salvage a relationship with these elements, but your spouse would need to get professional help immediately.
2. Lack of love or affection
Not feeling or receiving love or affection can mean that the marriage has ended. You or your spouse have likely checked out emotionally, and this can be difficult or impossible to overcome.
3. Inability to fight for the relationship
If you find that you aren’t able to fight for the relationship, it might be time to leave the relationship. You may find that you’re fantasizing about life without your spouse. That’s often a subconscious signal that you’re done with the marriage.
You should take the time to think about every aspect of the relationship so you can decide if it’s worth working on. If you decide to divorce, be sure that you learn about your options. Going into the process with as much information as possible should help you to feel less stressed and make decisions in your best interests.
